Vinyl Nitrile Sponge Gaskets

An integral part of our non-metallic custom sponge and foam gaskets and seals product line, our vinyl nitrile sponge gaskets are made from a closed cell sponge material that is composed of cells whose function is to prevent moisture from escaping and seal in gas (so long as the walls of its cells remain intact). A.J. Rubber & Sponge Ltd.’s vinyl nitrile sponge gaskets are very versatile, boasting many unique properties:

  • Application temperature range of -40°C to 82°C (-40°F to 180°F)
  • Slightly lower density profile than most other closed cell sponge gaskets
  • Slightly higher water absorption properties than closed cell neoprene rubber gaskets

The characteristics of our vinyl nitrile sponge gaskets lends to the commonly used name of the material used to produce them, “expanded rubber”. In its manufacturing process, raw compounds are combined and, using heat and pressure, a chemical blowing agent is added and as the material decomposes it produces nitrogen gas. The material is then heated in an oven, expanding into a “bun” anywhere from 2 to 4 inches thick. The expanded rubber is left to age, then split into sheets 0.062" thick or greater.
